The Westerkerk tower marks the eastern boundary, with the Anne Frank House on the Prinsengracht directly beside it. On Saturdays the square around the Noordermarkt church fills with farmers' stalls, and on Monday mornings it hosts a textile and bric-a-brac market. The hofjes, tranquil almshouse courtyards, sit behind unmarked entrances, and the brown cafés on the street corners have poured drinks for locals for generations. North lie the Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk with their independent shops; to the east, the Nine Streets connect the Jordaan to the grand canals.

Accommodation in this zone is intimate rather than large. Expect converted canal houses with steep staircases, compact boutique properties along the Rozengracht and Marnixstraat, and apartment-style rooms above shops. Bigger hotels stand on the edges, towards Westerpark and Haarlemmerplein. Small properties often close their front desk in the evening. Streets are narrow and parking is scarce, so the last few hundred metres are sometimes covered on foot, which also happens to be the most discreet approach.
