Javastraat, a long street lined with a genuinely diverse mix of kitchens, from Middle Eastern grills to Indonesian and Surinamese restaurants, gives Oost an evening's worth of options without needing to travel into the centre at all. It runs close to Oosterpark and has become one of the more talked-about food streets in the city over the past decade, without losing the neighbourhood feel that makes Oost distinctive in the first place.

For a stay based further east, Science Park, home to several University of Amsterdam faculties and a growing cluster of technology companies, marks the district's outer edge, a useful landmark if a hotel search turns up an address that far out. Most guests, though, will find everything they need much closer in, within a short walk of Oosterpark or the Dappermarkt itself.
