Adding a Second Guest to Your
Hotel Reservation

A second guest, in a hotel's own system, is anyone staying overnight whose name is added to the reservation, not simply anyone who comes up to the room for an evening. That distinction matters, because it decides whether extra charges, tax and breakfast allowances apply. A friend joining you for a nightcap before heading home is a visitor. A partner staying through to morning and checking out with you the next day is a second guest, and the hotel treats the two very differently.

Most hotels can add a second occupant either before arrival, through the booking platform or a direct message, or at the desk during check-in itself. If your reservation came through a third party booking site, changing the guest count there can sometimes take a day or two to update, so a direct message or call to the hotel is usually the faster route for anything close to your arrival date. Last minute additions are usually possible too, provided the room's own occupancy limit allows it, since most standard rooms are built for two. If you already know a second person will be staying the whole time, adding them before arrival tends to produce a cleaner final bill than sorting it out at checkout.

Not every room can accommodate a second occupant, whatever the price you are willing to pay. Compact single rooms, common in older canal house properties where space was tight to begin with, are sometimes genuinely built for one person, with fire safety and furniture layout both factored into that limit. If a second guest becomes part of the plan after you have already booked a single, the more reliable fix is usually a room change rather than an exception to the existing one, and it is worth raising the question as early as possible so the hotel has time to arrange it.

Many rooms are priced with two occupants already in mind, so adding a second registered guest to a room booked for one typically adds a per-night surcharge rather than doubling the rate. Amsterdam's city tourist tax is charged per person per night, so the total tax line also rises with a second name on the booking. Breakfast, where it is included, is usually included per registered guest as well, so a second occupant either pays for their own or the whole booking needs adjusting.

Like the room's primary guest, anyone formally added as a second occupant is generally asked for identification at check-in, following the same registration practice that applies to any paying guest in the Netherlands. This is a routine, universal step rather than anything specific to a particular hotel, and it happens whether the second guest arrives with you or joins a day or two later. If the second person is joining partway through your stay rather than at the start, mention the exact date to the hotel in advance so the front desk is expecting them rather than working it out on the spot.

An overnight companion visit is a personal, informal arrangement rather than a name added to your reservation, so it does not usually trigger this formal registration process. Your booking stays exactly as it was, in your name, and the evening runs on its own separate confirmation through WhatsApp rather than through the hotel's own system. If your particular hotel does have a stricter house habit around overnight visitors, it is still worth mentioning when you book, so the coordinator can plan around it.
